The National Planning Commission (NPC) has indicated that it would be difficult to achieve the sustainable development goals for the nation by following the existing working style and modality.

NPC secretary Kebal Prasad Bhandari said so while briefing the National Assembly, Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee today about the achievements made towards meeting the SDGs. He cautioned that it would be difficult to meet the SDGs if the political leadership were to continue with the style of working and structure currently in practice.

"There is a big opportunity for success in the periodic elections to the political leadership that works with sincerity and responsibly," he said.

The United Nations had set the SDGs in September 2015 so that no one is left behind in every aspect of development. The goals were determined to be fulfilled from 2016 to 2030. The SDGs comprise 17 goals, 169 outcome goals, and 232 global indicators.

NPC vice-chairman Bishwonath Poudel stressed a long-term vision of the political leadership, well-thought-out planning on the part of the employees, and the development of a system for result-oriented works.

Committee member Bamdev Gautam on the occasion expressed the commitment of the committee to fulfill whatever role was required of it regarding meeting the SDGs.

Another member, Dina Nath Sharma, stressed transport infrastructure development and linking education with production to expedite the development process.

He urged the NPC to play a proactive role in fostering coordination among the three tiers of government towards meeting the SDGs.

Committee president Taradevi Bhatta urged the NPC to carry out effective monitoring and assessment of the implementation for meeting the SDGs.
