Natural disasters result in 191 deaths in Bagmati Province over a three-month period

KATHMANDU: During the last three months of the current fiscal year 2081/82, 191 people died across 10 districts in Bagmati Province, not including the Kathmandu Valley, due to floods, landslides, inundation, and fires.

According to the Bagmati Province Police Office in Hetauda, 177 of these deaths occurred due to heavy rainfall on September 27 and 28, which caused floods, landslides, and inundation.

According to Superintendent of Police Durgaraj Regmi, 157 people died from landslides, while 11 were swept away by floods, and nine drowned in this period.

Additionally, eight individuals died from electrocution, four from lightning strikes, and one each due to a fire incident and an attack by a wild animal.

The disasters also left 173 people injured, and 11 individuals remain missing.

During this time, the natural disasters caused damage to 171 concrete houses, 673 mud houses, and 161 sheds.

The report indicated that 93 vehicles and 20 industries were affected, along with 83 schools and 12 government offices across various districts.

Furthermore, 48 concrete and suspension bridges sustained damage due to floods and landslides.

Regmi noted that many roads linking the federal capital, Kathmandu, have been blocked after bridges and roads were washed away, and repair efforts are underway to restore access gradually.
