The Kathmandu Metropolitan City(KMC) has launched a health screening drive of goats and sheep imported to the Kathmandu district from various parts of the country for the Dashain festival. The Department of Livestock Services and the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Expert Center based in Bagmati Province is collaborating for the health examination of livestock. The health screening aims to provide healthy meat to the people, the KMC sources said.

A goat or sheep screened healthy and fit for its flesh consumption during the examination is colored with green on its horn. A goat with its horn colored red is meant unhealthy and not fit for consumption.

Two separate teams assigned to carry out health screening have been mobilised for the task. One of them works from 7.00 am to 12.00 pm and another from 12.00 pm to 5.00 pm until October 13, the eighth day of Dashain festival, said KMC’s senior vet doctor Abadhesh Jha. In general, goats and sheep brought from various places to Kathmandu for the festival have been stored in Kalanki, Thapathali, Tukucha, and Balaju.

The health screening drive will also take place at Lagankhel in the Lalitpur district, Lokanthali and Sallaghari in Bhaktapur, Ranga Bazaar at Chalnakhel and Chandragiri.
