An initiative to move the Everest base camp has been launched. For the past few years, the Everest base camp has been located at an altitude of 5,364 meters.

Everest base camp is the main shelter for the climbers who go to climb the mountains every year. However, with the increase in the number of climbing teams and the increase in human activities, a direct impact is also being felt. There is a reduction of snowfall in the mountains and more problems of avalanches and eruptions have been felt.

Similarly, biodiversity is also found to be declining.

The Khumbu Area Coordinating Committee had conducted an on-site study on the possibility of relocating the base camp. The committee had suggested the Government of Nepal relocate the base camp after conducting an on-site study of the base camp. However, the location of the base camp has not been decided yet. The new base camp is likely to be moved 200 to 400 meters below the existing base camp.

Discussions will be held with the concerned experts about relocating the base camp to a place where it will not snow for 12 months. The committee is preparing to submit its report within two weeks.

The Government of Nepal is also positive about this. Director of the Tourism Department, Shurya Prasad Upadhyaya, said that it would take time to conduct a detailed study on the issue.

Humanitarian activity at the Everest base camp has been on the rise for many years. This spring, 325 climbers from 59 different countries were allowed to climb Mt. Everest. Due to the monthly settlement of hundreds of people, there is an increase in garbage. Excessive use of kerosene and gas for cooking in base camps has also affected the environment.

Similarly, the environment has become polluted due to open urination in the base camp. The direction taken by the people in the base camp is to be placed in drums and immersed in Lobuche.

Experts are confident that the concept of relocating the base camp will help keep the Everest region free from environmental pollution and preserve its natural beauty.
