After Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli lost the vote of confidence in the Parliament on Monday, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari issued a statement calling members of the House of Representatives (HoR) to claim premiership with the support of two or more political parties by May 13.

In fact, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Chairperson of Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSP) Upendra Yadav had issued a statement urging President Bhandari to call for the formation of a majority government as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal.

Based on the deadline given by the president to the parliamentarians to form a government, efforts are on to form a new government.

In this regard, Congress President Deuba has called the top leaders of CPN (Maoist Centre), Chairperson of Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal Yadav, and CPN UML leader Madhav Nepal to his residence in Budhanilkanta for discussions to form an alternate government. However, leaders of the Janata Samajwadi Party are divided on whether to join the alliance to form a new government.

Though Yadav seems to be in favour of joining the new government, Central Chairperson of Janata Samajwadi Party, Mahanta Thakur is against the idea. Issuing a statement, Thakur has said that his party will not forge an alliance with Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre) to form an alternate government.

Citing that issues raised by the party with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli were moving in the right direction, Thakur mentioned that more than forming a government his party’s priority was in getting the party’s agendas addressed.
