Participants in a programme called for ending the trend of spending huge amount of budget allocated for development works towards the end of the fiscal year.

In a programme organized by the Terai Development and Communications Centre Nepal here today, the speakers emphasized changing the tendency of staying idle towards the beginning of the fiscal year and springing into action towards the end, which, they argued would result in delivery of substandard works.

Member of the Infrastructure Development Committee under the House of Representatives, Lalbir Chaudhary, stated that there were instances of allocating Rs 100 million for preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR) and said that such tendency should be changed. He demanded that there should be reform in the practice of allocating higher budget to the constituencies of influential parliamentarians and not allocating any budget to constituencies of those parliamentarians not wielding influence.

He viewed that media had an important role in taking forward the development works.

Similarly, Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Keshav Kumar Sharma, Director General of the Department of Road, Sushil Babu Dhakal, and Chairperson of the Centre, Govinda Chaulagain, among others shared that only 66 per cent of the total development budget was spent in the last fiscal year 2022/23.
