Significant improvement in revenue collection at Birgunj

The revenue collection of the customs office has significantly improved with the increase in import and export of various commodities using the Birgunj region, the main trade gateway of the country.

Imports and exports at the Birgunj port have increased and revenue collection has improved as the impact of the coronavirus, which has emerged as a global pandemic, has lessened.

Compared to the second quarter of the last fiscal year, the Birgunj Customs Office has collected more than Rs. 34 billion in the same period of the current fiscal year. In the corresponding period of the current Fiscal Year, the office has collected Rs. 34.05 billion or Rs. 138.94 billion as compared to Rs. This is an increase of 32.46 percent over the review period.

Sumit Gupta, Information Officer at the Birgunj Customs Office, said that the revenue of the office has increased with the increase in the import of diesel, petrol, LP gas, fuel and jeeps, and other vehicles. He said that 21 percent more revenue was collected from vehicle import and 39 percent from fuel import in the current fiscal year as compared to the review period.

During the review period, the revenue of Rs. 25.78 billion was collected from the import of various vehicles worth Rs. 22.83 billion as compared to Rs. 31.30 billion was collected from the import of vehicles worth Rs. 28.14 billion in the current fiscal year, said Gupta.

Similarly, the revenue of Rs. 34.38 billion was collected from fuel import of Rs. 134.48 billion in the corresponding period of the current fiscal year as compared to Rs. 39.34 billion collected from fuel import of Rs. 70.82 billion in the previous fiscal year.

 The industrialists say that the revenue collection at the Birgunj checkpoint will be further improved if the government controls the rising interest rates and illegal movement of various goods in the border areas.
