The number of children getting infected by the coronavirus is increasing in Nepal as the new variant of COVID-19, Omicron, keeps surging globally.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the number of infected children has increased by 7 times in the last nine days. The infection was confirmed in seven children under the age of 10 on January 5. However, the number has risen to 49 on January 13.

The main reason for the rising infection rate among children is their lack of access to vaccines.

At the same time, the admission rate of children with COVID symptoms in the hospital is increasing. Experts are worried that the estimated wave of Omicron may infect countless children.

The third wave of the pandemic could affect children far more adversely than the previous waves did. Research has shown that Omicron is 10 times more contagious than the normal strain of Covid-19.

The government has instructed schools to close to protect children from infection. At home, experts have urged parents to follow public health standards to protect their children from infection. Parents have the most important role in protecting children from infection.

Symptoms of COVID-19 in children:

Symptoms like cold, loss of appetite, and general fever are common. However, infections of the upper respiratory tract, nose, throat, and other organs are also being seen in children which require serious medical attention.

If children are not eating well, have shortness of breath, cough, or fever, parents must consult with a doctor and get a PCR test.

If there are any symptoms like rapid breathing, nausea, oxygen falling below level 93, blue tongue, the children require immediate attention from doctors.
