It has been more than seven decades since radio broadcasting started in Nepal. Started with political purpose, radio broadcasting started with a radio station called Prajatantra (democracy) Radio from Bhojpur District in 1949 AD.

Radio Nepal started in 1950, shortly after the end of the Rana regime. The first government radio channel in Nepal, Radio Nepal was the only radio channel in Nepal for almost 45 years.

For a long time, it had succeeded in making a name for itself as a popular medium among the Nepalese. Many Nepali singers and other artists had the opportunity to present their arts to the public through Radio Nepal. As the musical programs were presented live, it is difficult to find old records of the time.

Radio Nepal was the one that brought Frequency Modulation (FM) radio in 1995. At that time, the radio channel broadcasted by providing time to various private organizations. However, two years later, Radio Sagarmatha became the first community radio station in South Asia.

At present, Radio Nepal is broadcasting news in 21 languages and programs in 20 languages. It highlights issues of provincial and local public interest from the provincial broadcasting centers in all the provinces.

Radio Nepal is currently in the process of Digitization of Audio Content and Archive System, which has enabled the preservation and consolidation of songs, music, literature and other audio materials.

The Government of Nepal has taken a policy to restructure Radio Nepal and another government media outlet Nepal Television into a public service broadcasting institution in the near future.
