Nepal records 8,970 COVID cases on Thursday, highest daily numbers

Nationwide COVID count reaches 368,580; 54 deaths reported

Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) Thursday reported 8,970 new cases of coronavirus infection, the highest daily record. With this, the COVID count has reached 368,580. Additionally, 100 persons have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the antigen test.

Likewise, the Health Ministry has recorded 54 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. The highest daily deaths were reported on Wednesday. As of Thursday, the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 has reached 3,529. Presently, there are 72,5561 active cases in Nepal.

The three districts of Kathmandu valley have recorded 3,972 cases which makes about 46.12 per cent of the total cases excluding those who tested positive in antigen test. Kathmandu registered 3,163 cases, Lalitpur 567 cases and Bhaktapur registered 242 cases, as per the data released by the MoHP.

As many as 2,707 patients of COVID-19 have recovered in the past 24 hours. As of Thursday, a total of 292,490 people have recovered from the viral disease, the data released by the MoHP showed. Today the recovery rate has dropped from 80.6 per cent to 79.4 per cent.

Earlier, the MoHP on Wednesday had reported 8,605 cases of coronavirus infection that had taken the nationwide tally to 359,610.

As of Thursday, a total of 2,578,418 persons have undergone the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Presently, there are 72,561 persons staying in isolation while 314 others have been placed in quarantine in the country.

More than 155.26 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus worldwide while at least 3,382,453 people have died from COVID-19, following an outbreak that started in Wuhan, China, in early December, a Reuters tally showed as of 3:34 pm, on Thursday, May 5, 2021.

The World Health Organisation referred to it as a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
