Talks began today between the government talks team and the Tharuhat struggle committee with the objective of finding ways to address the latter's demands. It may be noted that the Tharu Kalyankari Sabha and Tharuhat/Tharuwan Joint Struggle Committee have been waging a struggle putting forth various demands.
The government talks team is led by Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa 'Badal'. Both the sides shared their respective observation and positions in the first day of the talks held at the Ministry of Home Affairs, according to the Home Minister's Press Coordinator Kiran Bhattarai. The talks ended with a positive note today, with an agreement to meet again on Thursday.
The talks team led by Home Minister Thapa includes PM's foreign affairs advisor Dr Rajan Bhattarai and former parliamentarian Bhagawati Chaudhary. The Tharuhat/Tharuwan side is represented by Prem Lal Chaudhary, Padma Narayan Chaudhary, Chandra Bahadur Chaudhary and Prabhat Chaudhary.
The agitating Tharuhat/Tharuwan side has put forth 19-point demand including the release of the Kalyankari Sabha chair Dhaniram Chaudhary and MP Resham Chaudhary implicated in the Tikapur massacre, withdrawal of cases filed against Tharu leaders, declaration of martyrs to those killed in the movement, separate representation of the Tharu community in various organs of the state, among others.
