According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, the leakage of electricity has improved by 2.82 percent in the first five months of the current fiscal year. According to NEA, the power leakage has been reduced from 2.92 per cent to 9.10 per cent in comparison to last year.
NEA stated that this was possible because of the campaign on a regular supply of electricity and control of technical and non-technical leakage.
NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising said that the biggest part of the power leakage was towards distribution and the first task was to control it. NEA has set a target to reduce the overall system leakage to 15.5 per cent and distribution leakage to 9.5 per cent in the current fiscal year.
Ghising said that the entire team has been mobilized to control technical and non-technical leakage. He said that the leakage has decreased due to the completion of construction of new substations, upgrading of existing substations, increase in power consumption in the industrial sector, making unit readings effective, and reducing unit storage in customers.
According to NEA, the leakage has been reduced due to regular monitoring and action to control power theft, strengthening substations, and construction of new substations, conductors, transformers. Leakage control was done by increasing the capacity of substations, adding conductors, replacing overloaded transformers, and promoting the use of three-phase meters.
The NEA has launched a campaign to control non-technical leakage, crackdown on electricity theft, meter bypasses, change closed meters, encourage metering and identify and read customers who do not have meter reading (stock unit).
Among the distribution centers under NEA's seven provincial offices and two provincial division offices, the highest power leakage is in Madhesh Pradesh Provincial Office, Janakpur. The overall electricity leakage of 23 distribution centers under the Provincial Office Janakpur is 12.99 per cent. It was 17.36 per cent in the previous year. The Malangwa distribution center in Sarlahi has the highest leakage of 43.82 per cent.
Out of the six distribution centers under the Provincial Division Office Hetauda under Bagmati Province, Makwanpur's Palung Distribution Center has the highest leakage of 30.11 per cent while last year it was 26.58 percent.
Of the 20 distribution centers under the Bagmati Provincial Office, Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk distribution center has the highest leakage of 31.93 per cent. Last year, the leakage was 25.12 percent.
