Eight buried to death in landslide in Mugu, three missing

Eight people were killed and three others have gone missing when a landslide triggered by incessant rain buried them on Monday afternoon. The incident took place at Salim, Chhayanath Rara Municipality-11, the District Police Office, Mugu said.

Of the deceased, four are men and four women. All the deceased had stayed in the same house due to fear of a landslide. All of them died on the spot in the incident. However, the identity of the deceased and those missing in the disaster has not been ascertained yet, said Deputy Superintendent of Police, Subas Hamal.

A police team from Gamgadhi has reached the incident site to carry out search for the missing. Problem has surfaced in search operation due to continuous rainfall. There are around 35 households at Salim village. All the families have been shifted to safer places after landslide, he added.

A helicopter that was supposed to come from Surkhet for rescuing the victims could not reach the incident site till the evening.

Similarly, 10 houses have collapsed due to a landslide at the Municipality, Ward No. 8. The entire settlement at this location is at high risk of landslide. Twenty-five sheep and property worth hundreds of thousands of rupees was damaged when a house collapsed following incessant rainfall at Topla Gaun, Chhayanath Rara Municipality-7. Most of the people at Topla, Sigadi and Ghuira villages have been displaced due to imminent risk of landslide.

Likewise, a helicopter that came to rescue the landslide victims in neigbhouring Kalikot district returned to Surkhet and it would come on Tuesday early morning.

Meanwhile, power generated from different rivulets has been disrupted in the district after landslide swept away the water source, said Chief District Officer of Kalikot, Rom Bahadur Mahat.

The district also remains out of communication service, he added.
