The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has today marked the World Meteorological Day.

Every year since 1950, March 23 is celebrated as World Meteorological Day. This year the DHM has marked the day with the slogan, "The ocean, our climate and weather".

On the occasion, the DHM issued a statement with the objective of raising public awareness of climate change. It said, 71 per cent of the earth is made of the ocean that affects the weather and climate.

The DHM stated that the climate cycle has witnessed change due to the rising temperature of the earth. The snow in the mountains has been melting while the water level has been increasing in the ocean. There is also an inappropriate change in the weather pattern. As a consequence, Nepal has also witnessed excessive heat wave, drought, torrential rain, cold wave, lightning among other catastrophes. It has become challenging to minimise the loss incurred due to catastrophe, the statement said.

The department stated that it has prioritised making the weather forecast system accurate and reliable by developing and extending the analysis and assessment of climate effectively.

The DHM further stated that it has expected to draw the attention of one and all towards climate change and raise awareness.
