Six hundred and sixty new customs agents have been added. The Customs Department has made public the final list of new agents today through an open competitive examination through the Public Service Commission.

The department decided on Wednesday to make public the final list of agents who passed the oral competition out of 857 participants in the written competition.

A total of 857 people participated in the written test through the Public Service Commission on April 30. Oral interviews were conducted from June 19 to 27 among the participants in the written test.

According to the department, 660 students who participated in the written and oral examinations and got high marks in both examinations were selected. The department has stated that the examination has been conducted as per the customs act 2064, customs regulations 2064, customs agent examination procedure 2077 and the decision of the customs department.

The department had demanded a large number of customs agents on March 29, 2021. Licenses were opened for 660 agents at a time, saying no new customs agents had been added for 20 years. Due to the inability to appoint customs agents for two decades, there are only 170 agents at present.

Earlier, the examination was halted after a case was filed in the Supreme Court while trying to conduct the examination for licensing of customs agents. The court had ordered that the examination should be taken only by making provisions in the Act. The customs department has stated that the examination is being conducted by amending the act. Customs agents act as a bridge between traders and customs officials in imports and export.
