Electricity consumption in Nepal has reached its highest level this year since Tuesday as a result of the cold weather. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, electricity consumption has reached 1,699 MW.
NEA spokesperson Suresh Bahadur Bhattarai said that the electricity consumption would have increased to 1,750 MW if effective distribution of electricity had taken place. He said that power was cut in many places due to ineffective distribution of electricity using with old infrastructures and dropping temperatures.
Wednesday's electricity demand was the highest of the year. The NEA's distribution structure could not meet the high demand of electricity. He said that NEA has started adopting various strategies to increase electricity consumption by making its distribution effective.
The rate of use of electronic materials for heating has been found to have increased significantly in winter. In order to make the distribution effective, NEA has stated that the old electric infrastructures will be reconstructed, the underground structure will be operated immediately, the construction work blocked by the road will be coordinated and resumed immediately and the work will be started right away.
The NEA aims to increase the rate of electricity consumption to 1,800 MW from next year as the construction of sub-stations for distribution has been expedited and the transmission line expansion is in full swing. With the increase in consumption, the domestic production has been supplying electricity from India in the winter. Up to 650 MW of electricity has to be supplied from India at present.
