Hair care is one of the most essential elements to a healthy lifestyle. Ganesh Rokaya, a hairdresser at The Beauty Bar Nepal, Naxal shares some tips that you might find helpful while purchasing products and do’s and don’ts as well.

Not only is it necessary to choose our shampoo according to our hair type and its needs, it is equally important to keep in mind various treatments your hair has been through. “While purchasing a shampoo for your hair, you need to keep in mind whether you’ve straightened, colored or added any other sort of chemicals into your hair. If you have done so, it is best to avoid oiling as it will damage it rather than help it nurture”, Rokaya says. “Same goes for highlighting your straightened hair, go for keratin instead. While buying shampoo products, make sure you buy them according to whether your hair is straightened, colored or infused with keratin”, he adds.

After getting the correct shampoo for your hair, it is important to not wash it everyday. There’s a common misconception that washing your hair daily is good for your hair, but Rokaya fully disagrees. Washing your hair daily makes it dry and flat, making it look lifeless. “You should wash your hair thrice a week if you have oily hair/scalp, and twice a week if you have dry hair/scalp”, suggests Rokaya.

“The most important point for hair care is make sure you apply conditioner on it after you’re done shampooing it. It’s as important as a moisturizer after a face wash for your face”, he says. “Besides that, a weekly hair spa treatment is also recommended if you want to get the best out of your hair. These hair spa treatments are readily available ”, he adds.

While there are no proven studies regarding certain food and beverages affecting your hair. However, chronically sick people experience a higher chance of hair fall and hair damage because of the medicines. Taking a lot of stress also results in hair fall and damage. “Excessive alcohol intake can also make your hair really dry”, he says. “In order to strengthen your hair, you should focus on food that is rich in iron, vitamins, minerals and protein such as apples, bananas, grapes, etc. Our hair also basically requires the same nutrients that our body needs in order to stay healthy”, Rokaya says.

A couple of must-do things to keep your hair in a proper shape and healthy are listed below:

  • Regular hair spa treatment
  • Monthly hair salon visit
  • Weekly home treatment

There are a couple of things that you can do for your hair right from your home such as:

  • Using Aloe Vera gel as a conditioner and wash it off after 10-15 minutes
  • Use egg whites only without the yolk as a conditioner after shampooing
  • Apply olive oil on your hair and wash it off after half an hour
