Phoksundo trek to draw attention on climate change

A group of 60 women will be trekking in the remote Phoksundo area of ​​Dolpa to draw attention to the impact of climate change on women's lives and tourism.

The program to be held in the remote region of Karnali in October will be attended by women representatives from all the states and leaders of various sectors. The next trek is organized by Sath Sathai, an organization that marched on the Kalapathar on March 8.

The program was announced by organizing a program in Kathmandu. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Jeevan Ram Shrestha said the program would be effective in bringing Nepal's tourism to the world stage and conveying the message of the impact of climate change. 

Special guest of the program, Supreme Court Judge Sapna Pradhan Malla suggested that the government and the people should take initiative to save trekking and mountaineering. Chairperson of the Sath Sathai Organization Prajita Karki said that the impact of climate change on the high mountainous region, nature-based tourism and the problems faced by local women would be highlighted and various bodies would be drawn to solve the problem. The trip is a journey to understand, debate and find solutions to the impact of climate change on nature, nature-based local tourism and people's lives, said Chairperson Karki at the event.

The women's team is preparing to reach Phoksundo by air after a three-day trek from Jufal Airport in Dolpa and then from the district headquarters Dunai. The organization had issued a special declaration on climate change on March 8 on the day of Women's Day when 40 different women marched from Lukla to the Kalapathar area of ​​Everest. It has been decided to carry the issue of climate justice in the Himalayas on Women's Day every year.

Last March, there was cooperation with the Ministry of Forest and Environment, Nature Conservation Fund and various international organizations for the Kalapather program.

MPs and other people's representatives from different states including Madhesh, local people's representatives of Dolpa and stakeholders are also expected to participate in the Phoksundo walk and issue the Phoksundo Declaration. A special program including a walk is going to be held from October 8 to 14.

The organizers are preparing for the campaign with the slogan "Women United for Climate Justice and Nature based Tourism Development''. The organizers have informed that they will cooperate with the Ministry of Forest and Environment, Ministry of Tourism and various international organizations in the Fokusundo program as well.

Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal( TAAN) Khum Bahadur Subedi and others expressed their determination to be active in the campaign.
