The Attariya area in Kailali district remained tense on Tuesday due to demonstrations staged by the irate locals protesting after the deaths of a new mother and her newborn.

The locals blamed that the new mother and infant died due to, what the bereaved family claimed, gross negligence on the part of doctors at Malakheti Hospital at Attariya.

They demanded due compensation to the victim's families and stern actions against negligent doctors and nurses, claiming that their negligence led to the demise of the new mother and infant.

Police threw tear gas to contain the tense situation after the protesting locals attempted to obstruct Attariya road section. The traffic movement on the road section continued uninterruptedly after the police intervention.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Chand at the District Police Office, Kailali, police charged batons on the protestors after they pelted stones on the police personnel.

"Few rounds of tear gas were thrown to take the situation under control," DSP Chand said.

Laxmi Bhattarai, 28, of Godawari Municipality-2 in the district was admitted to Malakheti Hospital for her delivery. Her newborn died in the Hospital last Sunday.

Locals have been staging protests since the incident.

The bereaved family has been refusing to accept the dead bodies from the Hospital for their final rites, stating that they won't take away the dead bodies unless their demands are met.

The victim side, hospital administration and Godawari Municipality are holding a meeting at present to seek resolution to the problem, it was shared.
