The Taliban has sought help in running Afghanistan's airports during weekend talks with European Union officials. EU officials said in a statement issued on Sunday that they had "serious concerns" about the ongoing humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
"The talks do not indicate EU recognition of the interim (Taliban) government but are part of the EU's operational engagement in the interests of the EU and the Afghan people," the European Union's foreign service said in a statement. The Taliban delegation was led by Interim Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutakki. There are also interim ministers for education and health, acting central bank governors, and officials from the foreign, finance, and interior ministries, among others.
The EU side was led by Thomas Nicholson, the EU's special envoy to Afghanistan. Officials from the EEAS and the European Commission on Humanitarian Aid, International Partnership, and Immigration Control.
