Indian company's whooping cough drug kills 66 children

The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested not to use cough medicine for babies, produced by Medan Pharmaceuticals Company of India.

The WHO reported that 66 children died after taking whooping cough medicine.

During the media briefing on Wednesday, the head of the WHO said that India's Medan Pharmaceuticals Company has produced four types of cough and cold syrup. Children have died in Gambia after taking the medicine.

In Wednesday's media briefing, it was said, 'WHO has issued a warning regarding four drugs used in Gambia, which have been linked to serious kidney damage and the death of 66 children'.

WHO further said, 'These four medicines are cough syrup and cold syrup, which are manufactured by Medan Pharmaceuticals Limited in India. WHO is investigating it. This contaminated product has so far only been found in Gambia. But it may have been distributed in other countries too.'

WHO has suggested all countries not to use Medan Pharmaceuticals whooping cough medicine.

According to WHO, the amount of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol in those medicines is not the same.
