Fifth BIMSTEC Conference: Ratification of charter

The fifth summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multisectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) has approved the charter of the organization.

 The Heads of State / Government of the member countries have signed the charter and approved it through audio-visual. The charter has been signed by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

 The conference also approved three new documents. According to the Embassy of Nepal in Colombo, Foreign Minister Dr Narayan Khadka, who is in Colombo, has signed the BIMSTEC Convention on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters and the Partnership Letter on the Establishment of Technology Transfer Center in Colombo.

 Similarly, Ghanshyam Bhandari, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Head of the Regional Organizations Division signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Mutual Cooperation between Diplomatic Institutions / Training Institutions of BIMSTEC Member Countries.

 The Fourth Summit held in Kathmandu three years ago called for the need for a charter to build a strong BIMSTEC, restructure the organization, determination of the scope of work and sub-areas of the organization and lay the foundation stone for strengthening the secretariat.
