Veteran actor Dharmendra is considered one of the best romantic and action actors in the history of Indian cinema in the 70s-80s who won millions of hearts with his outstanding acting skills and his charming looks. Dharmendra worked with Meena Kumari, the 'tragedy queen' to Hema Malini the 'dream girl' who later became his wife. Throughout his career span, he had been fans’ favorite and was known as the ‘He-Man’ of Bollywood. As the actor turns a year older on December 8, take a look at some of his best movies.

Sholay

Helmed by Ramesh Sippy ‘Sholay’ is one of the biggest blockbuster hit films of Indian cinema. Dharmendra’s iconic tank top scene still remains everyone’s favorite even after almost 45 years of its release. Apart from Dharmendra, actors Amitabh Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, and Sanjeev Kumar were in prominent roles.

Chupke Chupke

Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the film was released in the year 1975, in which Dharmendra played the role of a newlywed husband who plays a practical joke on his wife's family with full support from his wife and friends. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, and Asrani in prominent roles and was declared a blockbuster hit.

Anupama

Anupama, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, is one of the industry's most critically acclaimed dramas. The plot revolves around the friendship of an outspoken young man and a woman with a past. Because of its straightforward plot and great presentation, the picture hit all the right notes. Shashikala and Sharmila Tagore were also a part of the film.

Pratiggya

Dharmendra portrayed the role of a cop in this action comedy film which was declared a blockbuster hit. Helmed by Dulal Guha the film also starred Hema Malini in the lead role.

Dharam Veer

The action comedy film directed by Manmohan Desai was a blockbuster hit. ‘Dharam Veer’ featured Dharmendra and Jeetendra as estranged brothers reunited later in life. Dharmendra received a lot of appreciation from the audience for his amazing performance.

Yaadon Ki Baraat

The film was based on the Old-Bollywood-popular formula of ‘siblings separated by fate’ and getting reunited in the end. Helmed by Nasir Hussain, the film starred Dharmendra, Neetu Singh, Ajit, and Zeenat Aman. Actor Aamir Khan was seen in a child role in the film.

The Burning Train

The action thriller film was inspired by a Japanese film and is considered one of the best thriller films in the Indian film industry. Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna’s heroic act against Danny Denzongpa left the audience whistling away. Helmed by Ravi Chopra the film was declared a blockbuster hit.

Mera Gaon Mera Desh

Helmed by Raj Khosla, the film was released in the year 1977 and was among the biggest blockbuster hits of Dharmendra’s career. Dharmendra portrayed the role of a thief in this action drama film which also starred Vinod Khanna in a negative role.

Phool aur Patthar

In the film, Dharmendra portrayed the role of a young criminal who leaves every bad habit aside and reforms for the sake of a left-behind widowed woman. This film questioned many societal preconceptions and performed an essential role in educating the viewers. Helmed by O.P Ralhan, the film also starred Meena Kumari and Shashikala in lead roles.

Ankhen

The Hindi spy thriller film directed by Ramanand Sagar was a big hit and also starred Mala Sinha and Mehmood in the lead roles. Dharmendra received a lot of appreciation for his performance in the film.
