Are you over-exfoliating?

To have clear and healthy skin, keeping it free from dirt and pollution is very crucial. Due to the amount of pollution we are exposed to on a regular basis, keeping our skin dirt-free might seem impossible. Exfoliating plays a vital role in deeply removing dirt, pollution, and even dead cells from the skin. Even though it is a major step in a skincare routine, overdoing it can cause serious issues.

“Even though exfoliation helps to keep the skin clear and dirt-free, it is equally important to not overdo it”, says Sushmita Subedi, a beautician at The Beauty Bar Salon. “Over-exfoliation causes damage to the skin and results in more complications like white patches on the skin and bruises”, she adds. Different skin care products that are introduced in the market often make us feel like we aren’t doing enough. For this reason, women are often seen using all kinds of products on their faces. “Use of a variety of beauty and skincare products like cell-scrubbing cleansers, toners, and serums can also result in over-exfoliation. Most of us take it too far and end up with an over-exfoliated skin”, Subedi says.

Our skin often gives us some tell-tale signs that indicate over-exfoliation. It is important to pay attention to such signs to take proper care of the skin. “An over-exfoliated skin looks red and inflamed”, says Subedi. Due to its condition, the skin is irritated and the person might also feel a burning sensation and might be more sensitive to skincare products, even ones that are used daily. Peeling of the skin is another common sign of over-exfoliation. “It is common to breakout, especially small pimples when this occurs”, she says.

Treating over-exfoliated skin is very important and surprisingly quite easy too. To begin with, it is important to avoid all possible reactions to other products. Hence, the use of foaming cleansers, retinol products, and physical or chemical exfoliators should be stopped. “Using a mild cleanser is best to treat over-exfoliated skin as it won’t be harsh on the inflamed skin. Opt for a fragrance-free moisturizer to avoid reactions”, says Subedi. Extreme redness and raw areas can be treated with a rich emollient such as Aquaphor or Aqua Veil. Hydrocortisone cream or aloe gel works well too. “Once your skin has finally healed, you can start exfoliating slowly. Start by doing it once a week”, she adds.

What do you need?

  • Oil or an oil-based cleanser
  • Warm water
  • Soft cloth

What to do?

Use the oil or oil-based cleanser to massage your skin gently. Dip the soft cloth in some warm water. Squeeze the water out and place the warm damp cloth on your face and steam for 5 minutes. Rub your face very gently with the cloth after steaming. Dirt, dead cells, and excess oils come off easily.
