Research Capacity Building Training Started at Kathmandu

A research capacity building training on 'Data Analysis and Scientific Paper Writing' organized by Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu started from 4th September, 2023. The training is the part of the collaborative research project supported by ANSO, China and jointly organized by Central Department of Geography TU and Kathmandu Center for Research and Education (KCRE)-CAS-TU.

Prof. Dr. Dharma Kanta Bankota, Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, as a chief guest, inaugurated the training program. Wang Xin, Consular from Chinese embassy attended the program as a distinguished guest. Prof. Cao Jinhua, Executive Director, ANSO, Prof. Dr. Shiva Lal Bhusal, Rector, Tribhuvan University and Prof. Dr. Tao Wang, Executive Director, KCRE-CAS-TU attended the program as special guests. Similarly, Prof. Dr. Kushum Shakya, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, TU and Prof. Dr. Binil Aryal, Dean, Institute of Science and Technology, TU was other guests of the program. It was also attended by Directors, Department Heads, Professors and Researchers. Online attendants were researchers and staff from ANSO and IGSNNR, Beijing, and Bangladesh.

The Training is a part of the ongoing collaborative research funded by the Alliance of International Science Organization (ANSO). As the Principal Investigator of the project and coordinator of the training, Prof. Dr. Prem S. Chapagain welcomed all guests and participants and highlighted the need of the capacity development of the young faculty of the university. The South Asian region is climate sensitive region and experiencing increasing effect of climate change especially in the agriculture sector. There is an urgency to do a detail study for evidence based policy to combat climate change impact, for which TU needs to enhance the research capacity of university faculties. A training participants include a total of 27 faculty members from three universities, namely Tribhuvan University, Open University and Far-Western University. Participants are from Ilam district in the East to the Dadeldhura District in the west. It is expected that this training will provide knowledge and practical skills on data analysis and scientific paper writing that will contribute to the career development of researchers and knowledge production in respective research fields.

The ANSO Executive Director Prof. Cao Jinhua wished the success of the training program and expressed his satisfaction with the wise utilization of funds/resources on research activities of the project. He underscored the global issue of climate change and its effect and stated the achievement of ANSO within 5 years of establishment. Prof. Dr. Tao Wang, Executive Director, KCRE-CAS-TU highlighted the importance of the training and shared that university departments can benefit from KCRE by organizing research and capacity development activities. Mr. Wang Xin, the Consular of the Embassy People’s Republic of China in Nepal stated that China has made significant progress in science and technology research. He stressed that China and Nepal have many cooperation and China would like to increase cooperation in academic and development sectors in Nepal.

Prof. Dr. Dharma Kanta Baskota, the Vice-Chancellor, stressed on the importance of research capacity development for enhancing research-based education. He thanked the research team and highlighted the importance of the study of households' adaptive capacity to climate change for devising the appropriate policy for climate change policy formulation at different levels.
