Nepal Press Council Urges Responsible Social Media Use

In recent times, activities affecting social harmony, religious tolerance and peace and security have been taking place in some parts of the country. Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok have been widely misused in such activities. The Press Council of Nepal has drawn serious attention to the fact that some unlimited, rude and factual content found on social media has created confusion in the public mind.

The council is taking such activities seriously and is coordinating and facilitating with the state agencies to solve the problem.

Likewise, some objectionable content seen on social networks used by the media and media workers has also been doing various things to correct and raise awareness along with monitoring trends.

The Council appeals to all social media users not to post such objectionable content.

 In 5(1) of the Journalist Code of Conduct-2073 (First Amendment, 2076) 'Journalists and media are against the sovereignty, geographical integrity, nationalism and independence of Nepal and disrupting the harmony and social harmony between different castes, religions, sects, languages and cultures. The council has drawn the attention of the concerned parties as there is a provision that 'produce, publish, broadcast and distribute material that encourages caste discrimination or untouchability, or is against public decency or morality'.

In addition, the Press Council Nepal makes a special appeal to all media and media personnel to exercise moderation and caution when reporting such incidents, to check the facts and to fully follow and implement the journalistic code of conduct.
