Garbage management work in the Kathmandu Valley has resumed from today with the help of security personnel following the continuous obstruction of locals along the Pasanglamu Highway.

Garbage management in the Kathmandu Valley, which had been suspended for 14 days due to disagreement with the locals, has been started from today after deploying 300 security personnel on the initiative of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The construction company assigned to repair the Pasanglamu highway did not complete the work on time, so the locals did not allow the garbage truck to pass through the place.

After failing to reach an agreement with the locals even after repeated discussions, security personnel were deployed on the road section from Mudkukhola to Tinpiple with the help of the Home Ministry. Lately, waste management work at 18 local levels of Kathmandu Valley has been stopped since April 24. Garbage has been blocked on the road due to obstruction of the residents of Pasanglamu Highway saying that the road leading to Sisdol in Nuwakot has not been repaired in time.

Sarita Rai, head of the Kampa Environment Department, said that the management work was done with the help of security personnel as there was no long-term solution for garbage disposal and the problem started when garbage remained on the road for a long time. According to him, the road construction that started in 2013 AD has not been completed so far and the locals have been obstructing the garbage disposal as a form of protest.

"The central government should be sensitive to such issues," said Rai. "We have to find an alternative to that immediately," said Rai.

According to Kampa, the problem has arisen due to non-completion of the long-term garbage management site under construction at Bancharedanda, two kilometers away from the place where the garbage is being managed. Every day, 1,200 metric tons of garbage is being sent to Sisdol from the Kathmandu Valley. Out of this, 500 metric tons of garbage is released. At least 200 vehicles, both private and private, are used to transport garbage to Sisdol daily.

About 75 percent of the garbage emitted daily from the Kathmandu Valley is being managed in Sisdol. Due to the obstruction of the locals, the final management of garbage could not be done for 32 days in March and April. As regular rains have started and more garbage will be released during the rainy season than in other times. There will be more difficulties in terms of garbage management in the coming days, said Kampa.
